IWAI
CAMP was a thriving community of about 63
homes located in the downtown area between School St. and Holt Lane in the
mid-1900's. The property was on leasehold land owned and managed by the Iwai
family, who also operated a retail grocery store at the camp entrance.
Kamamalu Park with basketball court and baseball field fronted the camp on
School St. The Golden Wall Theatre was located across on mauka side of School
St., where many residents experienced the early days of cinema.
The
"Camp" was a very close knit community where everyone knew each other,
no one locked their doors, and milk was delivered in the now vintage milk
bottles. Adorned with ample fruit trees, a favorite passtime of the kids was
climbing up the mango trees armed with salt & pepper and paring knife to
enjoy a common mango snack.
The property
was eventually razed in order to make room for the H-1 Freeway and Pali Highway
in the 1950's.
A cherished vestige of a bygone era giving way to modern development.
